I Just Gave Birth When My Husband Was Sent Abroad for a Six-Month Work Assignment

The tears hadn’t even dried on my cheeks when the nurse handed me my newborn twins, and the phone rang with a call that would shatter the fragile peace of our new life. Andrew had just been ordered abroad for a sixmonth assignment. Before he left, he stopped at his mother’s cottage to say goodbye, and he returned with a fiveyearold boy in tow.

Meet Oliver, Andrew said, lowering his head, hell be staying with us.

The words hit me like a slap. My voice fled, and the newborns let out a wail that seemed to echo the loss I felt. I clutched the infants, my heart pounding, while Andrew later tried to explain the tangled past that had led us to this moment.

Six years earlier, he had been coerced into marrying his neighbour, Poppy. They spent a single night together before she discovered she was pregnant. Poppy was a recluse, buried in old encyclopaedias, convinced she was smarter than everyone in the village. When her mother learned of the pregnancy, she marched to Andrew, threatening him into a marriage he never wanted.

After the boy was born, Poppys mind fractured. She no longer recognised faces and would scream at the sight of the child. She was committed to a mentalhealth facility, and Andrews own mother took Oliver under her wing. Andrew kept his distance, barely speaking to his son.

When Andrew met me, he hid this whole history, terrified that the truth would drive me away. Just before his overseas deployment, he returned to his mothers house to drop off money for Oliver, only to discover she could no longer care for her grandson. With a heavy sigh, he brought the boy to our doorstep.

I looked into Olivers eyes and felt my heart constrict. Fear flickered there, pure and innocent. I pulled him close, cradling him against my chest, and knew that none of this was his fault. Andrew exhaled, a breath of relief, and kissed my forehead.

The next morning he boarded the plane, promising that in six months he would be back and we would begin a new chapter together.

He never returned. I was left alone with three children, and even my own mother turned her back on me, calling me mad. For ten years I clung to the hope of his return, until a distant acquaintance whispered that he was living abroad with a wealthy woman.

I never regretted taking Oliver in. He grew into a bright, decent young man, trained as a software developer and soon became one of the most respected coders in Manchester. Though he set up his own flat, every Sunday he would drive back, fill the house with his laughter, and spend the whole day with his brothers and me.

One crisp autumn afternoon Oliver pulled up in front of a stately twostorey house, an enigmatic grin on his face.

Gather round, he said, slipping me a set of brass keys. Ive got something for you.

Come in, Mum, he added, his voice trembling with emotion.

I felt a wave of happiness wash over me so intense I nearly fainted. Oliver had built a spacious home, each room lovingly designed for each of us. The twins ran through the corridors, exploring their new kingdom, while I wrapped my arms around Oliver and whispered my thanks.

It’s me who should be thanking you, Mum, Oliver replied, eyes shining. You loved me as if I were your own, raised me despite every hardship. I always promised my father Id give you a home. Today that promise is fulfilled.
